Self-Publishing: What You Need to Know Before You Start

Self-publishing is more accessible and easier than ever before. Just because you can, doesn't mean you should. It can be a rewarding endeavor, but it's important to be well-informed before you embark on this journey. Here are three key things to know before self-publishing:

1.Quality Matters:

  • Editing and Proofreading: Invest time and, if possible, money to hire a professional editor.  A well-edited book significantly improves its chances of success. Typos and grammatical errors can detract from the reader's experience and harm your credibility as an author.
  • Cover Design: Don't underestimate the importance of a visually appealing cover. A great cover design sells books! A great design will convey the genre, tone, and essence of your book.

2. Marketing is Essential:

  • Build an Author Platform: Start building your online presence and author platform well before your book is published. Even if you go with a publisher, they will encourage you to do this. Engage with potential readers through social media, a website, or a blog. This can help create a community interested in your work. Have you heard of #BookTok, yet? I just learned about it and was surprised by its popularity.
  • Book Launch Strategy: Having a strategy around promoting your book is an essential part of selling it. This will likely include choosing an official launch date, leveraging pre-orders, engaging your community, and coordinating promotional efforts. Utilize various marketing channels, such as social media, email lists, websites, and podcasts to reach readers.

3.Distribution and Formats:

  • Ebook, Audio, and Print Formats: Consider publishing your book in multiple formats, including ebooks, audio, and print copies. Platforms like Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP) and IngramSpark allow you to publish in both digital and physical formats, while Audible Publishing Services allows you to record and publish your book in audio format. Ensure your book is formatted appropriately for each version.
  • Distribution Channels: Research and choose the distribution channels that best suit your goals. Amazon is a major player, but there are other platforms like Barnes & Noble, Apple Books, Audible, and Kobo. Additionally, explore options for getting your book into physical bookstores or libraries.

Bonus Tip:

  • Legal and Copyright Considerations: Understand copyright laws and ensure that you have the right to publish the content in your book. Be aware of any potential legal issues, such as libel or plagiarism. It's advisable to consult with legal professionals if you have any concerns.

In Season 3 Episode 7, Emery and I spent some time talking about all the research that goes into self-publishing along with the diversity around accessibility that can be achieved when you own the rights to your work. Self-publishing is more accessible than ever, and depending on your goals, might be a better fit than traditional publishing routes.

If you are struggling with figuring out how to prioritize what needs to be done in your business, find yourself getting overwhelmed by it all, or just need some support building systems to help you get in flow, I offer consultations to help. Send an
email and let's talk.
